MATLAB User Group Conference – Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Oct 10th 2024

On October 10th 2024, nearly 100 members of our growing MATLAB user community gathered to hear insightful presentations from TII, HALCON (EDGE Group), PEEC Mobility, LODD, STATS Group and MathWorks. This event was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen connections among users in the region.

The presentations were exceptional, sparking engaging discussions and numerous questions from the audience. Throughout the day, we received multiple requests from participants eager to connect with others in similar or complementary fields, highlighting a strong desire for collaboration and networking.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest in follow-up events in the region. It’s clear that our community is eager for more opportunities to engage and learn together!

Our presenters

During his keynote speech, Dr Chaouki Kasmi, Chief Technology Officer at TII spoke about how TII is positioning Abu Dhabi as a world-leading research and development hub, attracting and nurturing both global and national talent. With diverse initiatives across various sectors, the aim of TII is to contribute significantly to the UAE’s knowledge economy , while also fostering partnerships that will create a lasting social and economic impact.

Dr. YJ Lim, the Robotics Product Manager at MathWorks, has navigated every aspect of the industry, establishing himself as an expert in autonomous systems. He introduced the group to several innovative MathWorks customers and discussed why they continually choose MathWorks products. Dr. YJ provided valuable insights into why UAVs crash (spoiler: it might be the GPS) and how simulations can save time, resources, and assets. He also highlighted how AD/ADAS technologies are crucial for growth in the automotive software sector and explained how MathWorks products can accelerate development processes.

People attending MATLAB User Group Conference 2024 - Abu DhabiSam Jarratt, Engineering Manager at STATS Group, introduced us to STATS Group, the market leaders in pressurized pipeline isolation, hot tapping, and plugging services. Their innovative approach to utilizing MathWorks data analysis capabilities for a valve replacement mechanism is truly impressive, allowing for replacements without the need for shutdowns.

Slobodan Pajic, Head of System Design at HALCON (EDGE Group), knows a thing or two about projectiles, having dedicated much of his career to their study. During his presentation, Slobodan shared fascinating insights about the many projects at HALCON that are currently leveraging MathWorks solutions. With a blend of enthusiasm and expertise, he explained how the software is helping them with trajectory planning, system modeling, real-time data processing, and much more.

Dr Prasanna Raut and Dr Cristino de Souza Junior came to us from the very interesting Autonomous Robotics Research Center (ARRC) at TII. They discussed how MATLAB plays a key role in advancing research and development at ARRC because of its strong capabilities for algorithm development, simulation, and system prototyping across diverse areas, including UAV Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) and wireless communication systems.

Dr Majed Boujelben from PEEC Mobility Motor Vehicle Assembly took time out of a busy week of testing to introduce PEEC Mobility to the group, sharing their innovative approach to repurposing retired vehicles as a creative and cost-effective alternative to manufacturing new electric vehicles. He demonstrated how the company is leveraging MATLAB in various aspects of their vehicle control unit (the brain of an EV electrical system).

Emre Tileylioglu is a Flight Software Engineer at LODD and was the perfect candidate to illustrate how MATLAB is helping to take their company to new heights. LODD uses automation, autonomous vehicles, and advanced software to simplify logistics operations, reduce costs, and speed up delivery. With MATLAB, they have been able to detect errors early, cut coding time and manage system requirements and traceability.

Dr Younes Al Younes is a Research Scientist within the Propulsion and Space Research Center (PSRC) at TII.PSRC works with leading global institutions, in the field of aerodynamics, aircraft propulsion and turbomachinery, space exploration, while focusing on artificial intelligence, disruptive propulsion designs and sustainability. He spoke about how MathWorks products are helping them to accelerate and enhance their research on both the development and deployment sides of their projects.

Dr Tarcisio Silva is a Researcher working in the Smart Materials team at TII. Tarcisio is no stranger to CES events, having previously engaged us at the MATLAB User Group Conference in 2022 with an earlier version of his presentation on active vibration control and its wide potential applications in several industries. This time, he returned to share an exciting update on the progress his team has made using the Experiment-in-the-Loop approach.

Roundtable discussion.

The day ended with a roundtable discussion on the topic of “Engineering Towards a Technology-Driven Economy” and this proved to be an enlightening experience, featuring three insightful panelists: Dr YJ Lim, Dr Younes Al Younes and Slobodan Pajic, who shared their expertise on critical issues facing the industry today.

Each panelist was asked to address the top challenges and priorities in deploying technology, and their responses offered a well-rounded perspective on the complexities involved. They emphasized the importance of not only embracing technological advancements but also navigating the hurdles that come with implementation. Their insights on talent acquisition and the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration highlighted the multifaceted approach required to drive innovation forward.

Overall, the discussion was a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable insights and engage with these experts who are genuinely passionate about shaping a technology-driven economy.
